Hossa Hiking Area

This week's letter in ABC Wednesday is Hossa Hiking Area in Suomussalmi, Finland (just south from Kuusamo). This particular hiking area is best known from rock paintings, which can be found from bottom of that rock face in photograph. In summertime only real option for watching those paintains is from the pier that you can see next to us, because all the people in photograph are actually standing on top of frozen lake.
Photograph was taken along one week snowshoe hiking trip in the area. If you wish to see more scenes (like details about rock paintings), check my photo album about Hossa Hiking Area.

  4. Oh, forget the Spring flowers, I think I would like to be there right now. No skiing in 2010 for me...yet. Too bad, so sad.

According to outdoors.fi, those paintings are 3500-4500 years old, so its unlikely that we will ever learn names of these early graffiti artists. However, you can read more about the sight from http://www.luontoon.fi/page.asp?Section=12711

    Roger:
Due to historical value of those rock paintings, you would be fined and/or jailed from climbing that cliff.
