My choice for the letter is cross, which shape matches with the letter. Depending on your point of view, it is either nice or bit silly followup to my previous entry into photo theme for Thursday.

This week's theme in photo theme for Thursday is "LIGHT" (Candle, Reflected, Shiny, Colourful, City Lights,...).
My choice for this theme is photograph from Sotkamo. Each Christmas locals will create big cross out of packed snow and during the night those, whose relatives have been buried elsewhere, can bring candles on it. By the morning time, it has huge collection of candles.

This week's letter in ABC Wednesday is W.
My choice for the topic is winter. Photograph was taken on February 2008 in Sotkamo, while we were hiking in a forest. Normally Finns would prefer cross-country (xc) skis in this kind of activity, but I personally prefer snowshoes, because they give you better control when you are moving in forest (while xc skis are better, if you have to move fast and/or long distances over frozen lakes, etc.).

My last minute choice for the letter is long time exposure from Vattuniemi, southern peak of Lauttasaari, Helsinki. It is pretty typical example about finnish beach in a nighttime.

Hero - Villain

Park drive in Ngorongoro crater

This week's topic in Two 4 Tuesday is Hero - Villain.
I chose this photograph from my honeymoon, when we traveled to Tanzania and visited four national parks (Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti) along other activities.
Visitors and park officials in these African National Parks are heroes in a sense that they provide income to local economy, which on its small part gives them reason to maintain and protect these precious parks. On the other hand, there is always risk that people wants to maximize short term revenues and increase tourism beyond the limit that nature can survive, since all these park drives will take their toll on plants etc. If this happens, then we can start wondering if visitors and park officials are villains.

Tarangire Safari Lodgen terassilla

Valokuvatorstain 152. haasteen aiheena on pysähtynyt.
Vaikka Afrikan kansallispuistoissa olevat erilaiset hotellit ja/tai lodget ovat nykyään puhelinverkon piiriin, niin maisemia tarkastellessa tuntuu silti, että aika pysähtyy. Tämä illuusio jatkuu siihen asti kunnes havaitsee että on jo aika lähteä puistoajelulle tai huomaa maisemassa jotain liikettä ja alkaa seuraamaan eläinten liikkumista maiseman halki.
Tarangire Safari Lodgessa, jonka terassilta tämä kuva on otettu, hotellivieraiden käytettävissä oleva alue oli muutama sata metriä pitkä, mutta korkeintaan 25 metriä leveä vyöhyke harjanteen reunalla (poikkeuksen muodosti hotellin ravintola, vastaanotto ja pieni uima-allas). Tämän alueen ulkopuolelle ei ollut lupa poistua, koska alueella ei ollut mitään raja-aitoja hotelli-alueen ja kansallispuiston välillä. Yöllä ei myöskään ollut lupa liikkua alueella ominpäin vaan yökävelylle haluavan olisi pitänyt heiluttaa "teltasta" käsin valoa teltan edustalle ja odottaa kunnes hotellin vartija tulee saattamaan.

Asematunneli (underground tunnels) in Helsinki

This week's letter in ABC Wednesday is U.
My choice for the topic is underground. Asematunneli is underground network of tunnels, which has entrance points in Central Railway Station, Metro station, Forum shopping mall, Aleksanterinkatu, Citykäytävä and couple other places. This scene is from May 2006. About month ago, they had flooding accident above this place and the place got badly flooded. At least for next few weeks, metro trains won't stop in the metro station, which entrance is normally under those H&M advertisements.

Hakaniemen tori joulukuussa

Tiesin jo aamulla kotoa lähtiessä, että joulukuun osalta 12 kuvaa projektin valokuva tulisi varmasti olemaan erilainen kuin aikaisempina kuukausina, koska marraskuun kuvassa aurinko oli jo virallisesti noussut, mutta joulukuun kuvaushetkellä siihen olisi melkein tunti aikaa. Kotiovesta ulos astuessani minua odotti iloinen yllätys. Yön aikana maahan oli satanut ohut kerros lunta, minkä seurauksena kotipiha oli muuttunut valkoiseksi.
Torille saapuessani maan valkoinen pinta oli jo hiukan kärsinyt torin liikenteestä, mutta sitä oli kuitenkin vielä sen verran, että se näkyy ongelmitta valokuvissa.
Valokuvauksellisesti ajattelin kaikkien projektin haasteiden olevan jo ohi, mutta en olisi voinut olla kauempana totuudesta. Hakaniemen torin katulamput olivat nyt ensimmäistä kertaa tämän projektin osalta päällä ja niistä tuli aivan uskomattomat heijastuksen ensimmäisiin koeotoksiin. Koska kameran polttoväli, kuvauspaikka ja suunta oli jo syyskuussa lyöty lukkoon, niin tämän asian korjaamiseksi ei juurikaan ollut mitään keinoja tarjolla, vaan ne täytyy hyväksyä osaksi joulukuun valokuvaa.

Sininen ja valkoinen Lapissa

Valokuvatorstain 151. haasteen aiheena oli "sininen ja valkoinen".
Lähestyvän itsenäisyyspäivän ja Talvisodan 70-vuotispäivien kunniaksi ajattelin ensin valita kuvan aiheeksi Suomen lipun vuodelta 2005. Luotan kuitenkin siihen, että suomenkielisenä valokuvaushaasteena, joku muu on päätynyt jo samaan aiheeseen ja lähdin pohtimaan sinitaivasta ja kumpupilviä.
Pikaisen valintaprosessin jälkeen päädyin syyskuussa 2007 tehdyltä vaellusreissulta otettuun valokuvaan. Kuva on otettu vaelluksen toisena päivänä kun vaelsimme Karigasniemen suunnalla olevalta Sulaojen leiripaikalta Kevon luonnonpuistoon.

Campsite by the lake in Käsivarsi Wilderness Area

Campsite by the Vuomakasjärvi lake in Käsivarsi Wilderness Area

This week's letter in ABC Wednesday is T.
My choice for a word is tent. Photograph was taken in five day hiking trip in Käsivarsi Wilderness Area (in Lapland). It was one of the rare evenings, when sun was shining in the evening. I decided to take advantage from this rare occurrence and took couple photographs as soon as packs had been taken off and we got tent up.
For those, who are interested about tent designs, this one is Hilleberg's Nallo 2. It is tunnel tent with two layers (Wikipedia seems to use double skin as a term) and weights little bit over 2kg. It is luxurious for one person, but works for two people if/when needed.
Tunnel tents as a genre are coming more and more rare nowadays. My personal feeling is that in Finland these tents still have their place among hikers in Finland, because they generally have good floorspace per weight ratio, but in other niches dome tents seems to be winning in popularity.

Couple of Mute Swans

Couple of Mute Swans

This week's theme in Two 4 Tuesday is Father - Mother.
These two Mute Swans are couple or at least that is my guess. Unlike many other birds, only differene between male and female Mute Swans is their size and even that one might not be obvious, because male can weight upto 12kg and females upto 11kg. Thankfully, I have other photograph about same pair of swans along with three younger swans.
