Swans (Mute and Whooper)

Mute Swan (Cygnos olor)
EXIF and large version of Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)

This week's letter in ABC Wednesday is S.
I decided that S is for swans. With swans I mean those birds (Mute and Whooper) instead of sailing boats. :)
There is strange contradiction how people feel about these two species of swans. Mute Swans in general seem to have bad reputation about being aggressive against anyone who comes to their territory and they tend to have large territories, while the Whooper Swan are Finland's national bird.

Here is quick summary about what they look like:

  1. I like mute swans, even if I was chased by one once. I shouldn't have gotten too close to its young!

  2. That first photo was one to hang on the wall. It looked as if you had put the swan on a mirror. Truly a beauty.

  7. We mostly have mute swans here, but other species visit sometime, or are kept in bird reserves. All very graceful birds, but I think my favourite exotic species is the ruffled black swan!

I didn't know that the Whooper swan was your national bird. :)

    Upea heijastus tuossa ekassa kuvassa.

  11. I guess their aggressive nature only shows up if you happen to get too close to them in mating and/or nesting season.
Bit like seagulls on that part :)

At least in mid '90s all paddlers were instructed that if swan starts heading your way raise your paddle straight up so that you will appear to be larger than swans.
